The pieces in the boutique represent a fraction of what we see. Most of what comes through the door — or arrives via consignment enquiry, estate contact, or sourcing trip — doesn't make it to the floor. Understanding what we select for, and why, is useful context for anyone buying from us.
Authentication first, always
Nothing enters the selection process without passing authentication. This is not a formality — it is the foundation. We have turned away pieces from well-known sources that failed authentication on label construction or hardware details. The vintage market contains convincing fakes at every price point, and the only protection against them is rigorous process applied consistently.
Condition threshold
We stock pieces in Very Good condition or above, with occasional exceptions for pieces of exceptional rarity. Good condition pieces are clearly graded and priced to reflect their condition honestly. We do not stock pieces that require significant repair before wearing — our clients should be able to wear a piece immediately after purchase.
Design coherence
We select for pieces that reflect a clear design vision — pieces where the construction, the fabric, and the silhouette are working together intentionally. This excludes a significant portion of the vintage market: pieces produced at volume with less design consideration, pieces from transitional periods where a house hadn't yet found its direction, and pieces where the brand name is the only interesting thing about them.
Rarity and market relevance
We pay attention to what is genuinely difficult to find. A Mugler corset jacket from 1989 in Pristine condition is rare in an absolute sense — there are very few of them, and fewer still in wearable condition. A Chanel tweed jacket from the 2000s is less rare but remains relevant because demand is consistent and the quality is reliable. We balance rarity with wearability.
Sourcing
Our pieces come from private consignments, estate contacts, specialist dealers across Europe, and direct sourcing in Paris and beyond. We do not buy from platforms where authentication is the buyer's responsibility. Every sourcing relationship is built on trust in the provenance of what we're being offered.
What this means for you as a buyer
When you buy from ALE PARIS, the selection work has already been done. You are not navigating a market where authentication is your problem and condition descriptions are approximate. The price reflects a piece that has been verified, graded honestly, and chosen because it merits being chosen — not because it was available.
